Origins

Fallow Flora was created by me, Aubrie Johnsen, a genderfluid human being whose ethereal nature has guided me to this moment. Like many of us, struggle has been like the Hierophant, a teacher, shaping the path beneath my feet as I traverse this world.

Plants have been ever-present in my life. A love that first blossomed in childhood found its way back to me in 2015, during my time at university. I worked on my first organic farm, an experience that opened the door into the world of agriculture and deepened my relationship with the land. That relationship will continue to expand forever.

Around that same time, I found myself without enough resources to feed myself. I turned to the woods. With the guidance of a friend studying botany, and the arrival of spring, I began foraging. I was learning directly from the land and its offerings. Weaving a relationship and learning about the symbiotic relationships all around me.

During this same time as well I was navigating an emotionally abusive relationship, alongside intense physical and mental health challenges. My relationship with the land, specifically the land of the Haudenosaunee, became a place of support, grounding, uplifting, and survival. That presence lives inside of me every day and I am inseparable from that connection.

After university, I worked hard to save to attend the Northeastern School of Botanical Medicine and learn from the beloved 7Song, but until I could save I continued self study — immersing myself in the local environment.

In 2019, things shifted, I packed up my bags and moved a couple hours away to Ithaca, to finally attend the Northeastern School of Botanical Medicine. Following the program, I apprenticed in the Free Clinic under Cal (a lead apprentice), continuing to deepen my practice while also working on organic farms.

After herb school, I found myself pulled into the realities of a capitalistic world — continuing my craft, but not yet fully rooted in it. I moved through cycles of growth and resistance, until my Saturn return marked a turning point. It reshaped how I move through the world and brought me into a deeper sense of self-trust.

From this, Fallow Flora came into being.

Currently, I live in Austin, on land I am slowly and intentionally tending just outside of the city. My relationship with this place is one of listening — of not forcing, but flowing in accordance with the rhythms of the land.

I am here as both an individual and part of a larger whole — continuously learning, unlearning, and weaving together the many facets of my being.

Through this work, I hope to connect with you, and to invite you into a deeper relationship with the earth and all of its inhabitants.

Thank you for being here, xoxo
